Abstract

In order to withdraw a liquid sidestream from a plate-type fractionating tower, the tower is provided, below one of the plates 2, with an annular baffle 25 having an up <PICT:0740764/III/1> standing cylindrical flange 26 which has an opening through which liquid flows down into a pan 21 which is designed and mounted so that it is spaced apart from the walls of the tower; and the liquid is withdrawn from the pan through a conduit 24 passing through the wall of the tower. The opening in the baffle is provided with a dependent lip 27. The pan shown, which is circular and has a sump 23, is freely supported on I-beams 22. The liquid is thereby collected and withdrawn without entrainment in the vapours passing up the tower. The tower shown is suitable for the fractionation under vacuum of the residue left after distillation of a petroleum oil at atmospheric pressure. In this case, part of the liquid withdrawn through line 24 is supplied to the top of the tower, as cooling liquid, through line 10. Drawoff conduit 24 is provided with a valve 24a controlled by differential pressure controller 28 which is connected both to conduit 24 and the tower. The tower is built-up from four sections A, B, C, and D. Section A contains bubble cap plates 2, and is supplied with condensing liquid through line 1). Section B, which is provided with disc and doughnut elements 3, 4, is used as a vapour-washing section to remove entrained residual liquid; washing liquid being supplied through line 7 to the upper surface of disc 3, and being collected in pan 31 and withdrawn through line 8. Section C is a flash zone which is supplied through inlet-line 5 with the material-to-be-fractionated after it has been heated in a pipe still (not shown). Section D is a stripping section which is provided with plates 6, and is supplied with stripping steam through line 12. Uncondensed vapours are withdrawn from the top of the tower through conduit 9, and residual liquid is withdrawn from the base through line 11. Liquid entrainment may also be removed by wire-mesh screens between sections C and B, and between sections B and A.
