Abstract
A vertical evaporator tube a, Fig. 2, containing a rotating agitator provided with vanes b, is divided into a lower heating zone A, and an upper unheated zone B which acts as a separating zone for liquid droplets carried up by the vapours. The upper zone may be, as shown, <PICT:0656605/III/1> <PICT:0656605/III/2> <PICT:0656605/III/3> of larger diameter than the lower zone or of the same diameter, and in the latter, the agitator vanes in the upper zone may be narrower than in the lower. Liquid to be evaporated or concentrated is supplied through inlet c, vapours taken off at outlet e and residues at exit d. Baffles may be provided in the upper zone between the agitator vanes and the tube wall to improve liquid separation. Heat transmission to the lower zone may be improved by fitting upwardly or downwardly directed conical rings l, Fig. 6, on the tube. In a modification, Fig. 8, the vapours are condensed by cooling water fed through the agitator shaft by pipe i and trickling down the cascades k, the condensed vapours and water emerging through exit o which may be part of a barometric discharge tube permitting operation under vacuun, non-condensible gases being drawn off through pipe p.
