Bleaching, processes for; agitating materials and liquids together. - Paper pulp, during agita- ,tion with bleaching liquor, is exposed to an air stream which is directed on a surface of the pulp not submerged in the liquor and sweeps away the gaseous products while also prevent. ing overheating of the pulp. Into the apparatus shown, pulp preferably of a 25 to 40 per cent concentration, mixed with a bleaching agent containing 20 to 30 grams of available chlorine per litre, so that a mass with a pulp concentration of preferably 18 to 20 per cent is produced, is introduced. An elevator 7 discharges the mixture on to an apron 15 from which it falls in a thin layer towards which is directed a series of nozzles 19 supplying air at a velocity of approximately 4000 feet per minute, the air and gases passing out by a pipe 20 which may be con. nected to an exhaust fan. The entering air may be cooled.
