Abstract

548,664. Aerating liquids. ELECTRO-CHEMICAL ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and GIBSON, A. R. April 16, 1941. No. 4954. [Class 14 (i)] An apparatus for introducing air or other gas or gases in a finely divided state into liquids, and more particularly for aerating liquids containing solid matter in solution or suspension for the purpose of effecting chemical changes therein, such as the oxidation of zinc or ammonium sulphite, consists of a vessel A containing the liquid into which is wholly immersed a unit comprising a casing B having a constriction B<SP>1</SP> shaped. to. constitute a venturi throat,. and enclosing near its lower end a propellor pump E. The casing is supported from a bracket C<SP>1</SP> which also carries an air intake pipe D adjustable with respect to the throat B<SP>1</SP>, the pump shaft E<SP>1</SP> running through this pipe to a bearing E<SP>2</SP> supported by a second bracket C<SP>2</SP>. This shaft is. driven through a clutch F<SP>1</SP> from a motor F mounted on a third bracket C<SP>3</SP>. In a modified construction, the venturi. throat is at the top of the casing and the pump immediately beneath the lower end of the venturi outlet cone, and the lower end of the casing, which may rest on the bottom of the vessel containing the liquid, is provided with a fitting which deflects the gas-liquid mixture horizontally, to avoid turbulence at this region and to assist in scavenging the base of the vessel.
