Abstract

479,857. Washing air. DOBBS, F. S. W., and ANDERTON, J. Aug. 12, 1936, Nos. 22187 and 26721. [Class 55 (ii)] Dust-laden air is treated with a mist of wetting agent (e.g. water or steam) within a tube-like duct, offering an unobstructed passage throughout its length, at a zone where its speed of How is greatest and the moistened air is caused to travel onward under pressure and velocity conditions which effect the deposition of dust on the dust walls. For treating air in the region of a belt conveyer K in a coal mine, the duct, which comprises an intake chamber A, a wetting neck passage B, and an expansion or depositing chamber C, is mounted above and to one side of the conveyer with a hood N over its intake and a tub M. The duct delivers through an extension P into a space above the conveyer screened by brattice cloth &c. R. Air is drawn in at the hood by the injector action of a nozzle directed into the neck B and supplied with compressed air and water through valved pipes 14, 15. Beyond the neck a ring of obliquely directed air jets effects turbulence of the moistened air stream or fixed or moving blades &c. imparting a gyrating motion may be provided. A fan may augment the flow of air or be substituted for the compressed air supply. Instead of compressed air, other media storable in liquid or solid form, such as solid carbon dioxide, may be used.
