To ensure that both hands of an operator remain clear of the descending die of a screwoperated hand press, a slidable bar d is urged by a spring f to a position preventing descent of the screw and is retracted by a hand lever e which, if the screw is to descend, must'be held with one hand while the other operates the usual weighted cross-arm to rotate the screw. The bar d, carrying a stop d', is slidable in a bracket bolted to the stationary press head b and co-operates with a ring c<SP>1</SP> which may be attached to the screw or may be loose thereon and be supported against the screw head by a spring. A compression spring acting directly on the bar d may replace the spring f.
