Abstract
951,808. Centrifugal switches. BRISTOL SIDDELEY ENGINES Ltd. June 18, 1962 [June 19, 1961], No. 21993/61. Heading H2B. [Also in Division F1] An overspeed governor comprises a centrifugally operated ring 6 mounted in a recess 5 in a collar 1 secured to a rotating shaft 2, the ring being held in its normal position, concentric with the collar, by a pair of spring arms 16 on the collar engaging in grooves 19 in the ring and moving to an eccentric position to operate trip switch means to stop the engine or machine at overspeed. The ring 6 is guided by a pair of flats 8, 9, Fig. 2, and is normally held with flat 10 thereon in engagement with a flat 14 in the recess, a flat 11 moving against a flat 15 to limit the overspeed position. The centre of gravity of the ring is adjusted by plugs 23 screwed into radial holes 22. As applied to an engine, Fig. 4, the ring 6 co-operates with a toggle device 31 associated with a micro-switch 32. When an overspeed occurs, the ring 6 contacts roller 24 to move rod 29 to throw toggle 31 over dead centre, whereby switch 32 is operated to cut off the engine feed supply. The toggle is reset by a handle 36 which may also be used to operate switch 32 manually for an emergency stop.
