Class 38(5) [Also in Group XIX] In a device for indicating the speed of a rotatable shaft means are also provided for indicating the direction of rotation of the shaft. Two inner ball-bearing races 3, 4, Fig. 2, are slidably mounted on the reduced end 2 of the shaft 1, the speed and direction of rotation of which is to be indicated. The outer races are located in an annular member 5 against an internal rim 6 by a compression spring 7 adjustable by a nut 9 on a screw 8. Rotation of the shaft 1 causes an arm 11 of the member 5 to close one or other of the switches 12, 13, Fig. 1, in accordance with the direction of rotation, the arm 11 then being arrested by a fixed stop 14. In another embodiment a ball thrust bearing comprising two rings 15, 16 outer races 17, 18 and a central ring 19 having a forked extension 20, 21 which cooperates with the contact lever 22 of a reversible switch, is used.
