698,843. Making heat-exchangers. BROWN FINTUBE CO. Sept. 13, 1951 [Sept. 18, 1950], No. 21546/51. Class 83 (ii). [Also in Group XIII] An internally-finned heat-exchange tube 10 comprises a plurality of separate fin members 13 formed of a base 12 and at least one fin at an angle thereto, the outer end of each fin contacting the interior of the tube and the adjacent base edges engaging one another at 16 to provide a self-supporting central open tube-like passage. As shown, the fin members are of channel form, the fins being flanged at 14 to engage the tube. The method of construction consists in assembling the channel-shaped fin members on a shaped central rod (not shown) and forcing the assembly into the tube, the rod being then removed and the fin members metallically bonded at 14, 16 by furnace brazing. With ferrous tubes, copper or copper oxide brazing powder in a liquid or paste vehicle is used.
