Abstract

695,384. Drying yarn. COURTAULDS, Ltd. Nov. 13, 1951 [Nov. 14, 1950], No. 27758/50. Class 34 (i) [Also in Group IX] In drying continuous filaments which have been treated with liquids, a tow 1 is spread into a flat band 10 of uniform thickness by passing it over and in close proximity to a flat surface 6 and directing a series of oblique air jets thereon the jets collectively having components of velocity in and transversely to the direction of movement of the tow: air passing through the tow spreads the filaments and is deflected back through the tow by the surface 6: the band is then mangled by passage through squeeze rollers to remove surplus liquid and dried on a series of heated rollers. As shown, the tow passes through a tube 2 connected by a series of pipes 7a, 7b, 7c to a distribution chamber 9 to which compressed air is supplied via a pipe 8. The surface 6 of the tube 2 may be provided with spaced transverse ribs to assist in deflecting the air.
