Abstract

918,598. Making cigarette filters. EASTMAN KODAK CO. May 12, 1959 [May 21, 1958], No. 16189/59. Class 130. [Also in Group IX] Tobacco smoke filter elements are made by passing a continuous crimped filament tow through a " slot " jet (see Group IX) in which tow and high pressure air are mixed in the converging entrance to a Venturi nozzle, passed through the restricted throat area of the Venturi and then allowed to expand rapidly in a divergent exit section thereof whereby the tow is spread transversely and the filaments displaced longitudinally relatively to one another, and forming the opened tow into the element. The tow may be opened by successive passage through separate jets and be withdrawn from the or each jet under minimum tension to permit relaxation. The filaments may be of cellulose acetate, cellulose acetate butyrate or propionate, cellulose triacetate, acrylamide polymers and copolymers, polyolefines and polyesters. The opened tow is passed through a spray booth wherein the filaments are brought to an adhesive condition by application of plasticizer, adhesive or solvent. As shown in Fig. 2, crimped and compacted tow 1 withdrawn from a bale 2 over guides 3 and 3a by feed rollers 4 angularly enters and leaves an opening jet 5 supplied with air under pressure. The tow passes to rollers 6 the speed of which allows the tow to relax and the filaments to vibrate and separate and for the crimps to assume completely random relative disposition. The opening and relaxing treatment is repeated between rollers 6 and 9 by passage of the tow through jet 7, and plasticizer is applied in a spray booth 8. The tow is fed to a cigarettemaking machine 10 to form filter elements which may be stiffened to form the final product. The rollers and machine 10 are adjustably driven from a common drive motor 11 through chain or cog belt and variable-speed transmissions 12 and 13. The jet 5 and rollers 4 may be omitted and the tow partly opened by tensioning between rollers 4 and 6 with or without the use of a beater therebetween.
