Abstract

1,172,289. Drying webs. MIDLAND-ROSS CORP. 17 Nov., 1967 [9 Dec., 1966], No. 52483/67. Heading F4G. [Also in Division D1] An apparatus for treating a web, e.g. setting of a liquid or pasty treatment, drying of a coating or an inking application or preheating a web to be treated, comprises an enclosure 20 having an entry 18 and exit 19 for passage of the web therethrough and a chamber 21 having a plurality of nozzles 23 arranged transversely of the web and positioned along the length of travel, each nozzle pointing towards a different position along the length of the path, each nozzle having a continuous slit facing the full width of the path to emit gas from the chamber 21 towards the path and also having an occluder with occluding and non-occluding portions alternately spaced along the length of its associated slit. The occluder preferably consists of a member having a plurality of spaced teeth 37 which depend into the nozzle blanking off some areas and leaving openings 36, 39 through which the gas may pass. The nozzles 23 depend from one surface of the plenum chamber 21. Up to half the outlet area of each nozzle may be blanked off by the spaced teeth of the occluder. The position of the occluder in each nozzle is adjustable to vary the nozzle slit area. By this means, using the same flow rate of gas as if the nozzle were left clear, there is caused an increase in turbulence of the gas on leaving the nozzle which results in an increase of heat exchange.
