Abstract

590,186. Drying fibrous material. AMERICAN VISCOSE CORPORATION. Sept. 27, 1944, No. 18432. Convention date. Jan. 19. [Class 34 (ii)] Fibrous material, in the form of a continuous blanket or mat, is dried by first teasing it and then introducing it, at a rotary seal 26, into a stream of heated air passing through a conduit 10, the heated air removing excess moisture from said material and simultaneously conveying it through a second conduit 11 to a cyclone separator 16. From the latter the material is discharged at 27 direct to a baling press bin and press or, alternatively, to a conveyer band 28 and, under the action of a fan 31, through a rotary seal 29, an opener 30 for loosening the material, a conduit 32 and a separator 33, to a bin 34 and press 35. The air in the separator 16 is permitted to escape to atmosphere through a stack 17, controlled by a damper 37, or it is returned through a conduit 38 to an air heater 6 where it is admixed with fresh cold air admitted through an inlet 8 and recirculated through said conduits 10, 11 by a fan 12 disposed therebetween. The air is preferably heated by steam, &c. from a boiler 2, the steam being circulated by a pump 4 through flow and return pipes 5, 9 leading to and from the heater 6, and the fibrous blanket or mat may be teased by a disintegrator 20 after passage through squeeze rollers 18 and before introduction into the drying conduit 10.
