694,825. Applying screw-caps to containers. ARENCO AKTIEBOLAG. May 15, 1951 [May 16, 1950], No. 11363/51. Class 125(ii) [Also in Group XXX] A method of handling containers, e.g. collapsable tubes, in container filling and/or closing machines having a conveyer for the containers is characterised in that members, e.g. sockets, of elastic material, e.g. rubber, are freely positioned in cups in the conveyer and used to enclose and carry the containers during their transport. As shown in a machine for applying screw-caps to collapsable metal tubes A, sockets 7 of rubber or like material are each located by means of an integral flange 9 in a channel 8 of a metal ring 6 and are caused to grip a tube by adjustment of a set-screw (not shown) in the ring 6 which bears against the socket. Each ring 6 is freely positioned in a cup 4 of an endless chain conveyer moved intermittently. At the cap applying station each ring 6 is lifted in turn on to a spindle 11 by a vertical plunger 20 carrying at its upper end a pair of grippers 21 for gripping a cap which has been loosely screwed on the tube. The upper end of the tube is received in a clip 15 on the spindle 11 which is rotated through pinion 17 and rack 18 to screw the cap home.
