In canning food in containers having attached ends and a filling opening in one of the ends, the walls of the container are sterilized, a sterile atmosphere is created about the container, the container is filled with a sterile food while in a sterile atmosphere, and while still in the sterile atmosphere a sterile plate is secured over the filling opening by a sterile adhesive. With the apparatus of Figs. 1 and 2 empty cans C having in their top ends depressions 4 with central filling openings 5 are fed, each can preferably containing a little water, one after another into sockets 6 of a rotating turret and there subjected to steam under pressure ; from the turret the cans are transferred into a high pressure steam chamber 12, by a turret 13 into a chamber 14 and filled with a sterile liquid or semi-liquid food. in a chamber 15, the chambers 14 and 15 being filled with steam at a pressure slightly above atmospheric; the filled cans are fed into a steam chamber 16 and there the area of the filling opening of each can is subjected to a jet of superheated steam from a pipe 17, at 18 a ring of sterile adhesive flux, e.g. a concentrated alcoholic solution of rosin, is applied round each filling opening by downward movement of a pad 20, Fig. 3, and at 25 a circular plate 22a punched. from a strip 23 of metal sterilized by steam in a chamber 26, is pressed down on each filling opening, Fig. 4; from the chamber 16 the temporarily sealed cans are transferred by a turret 29 along an open trough 30: thereafter the plates may be permanently secured to the container ends, e.g. at 34 by means of heating or solder-tipping irons 32 on arms 31, Fig. 5.
