693,865. Water heaters. VAPOR HEATING CORPORATION. May 16, 1951 [Jan. 19, 1951], No. 11478/51. Class 64 (i) A water heater has an inner water jacket 30 surrounding a central heating chamber fired by a fuel burner 55 at one end, the inner peripheral wall of the jacket having fins 50a formed by axiallyspaced toothed rings 50, the teeth occupying most of the radial depth of the ring, and being preferably staggered in adjacent rings. Furthermore, the hot gases are projected past the toothed rings with a whirling vortex movement produced by a fan for combustion air. In the example shown, a second preheating water jacket 22 surrounds a space 86 forming a return flue for the hot gases leading to an uptake 87, and a further set of toothed rings 51 in the space 86 are attached to the outer periphery of the inner jacket 30. Water from the mains or returning from space-heating radiators enters the outer jacket at 45 and leaves at 47 where it is fed by pipe 48 to the inlet 38 of the inner jacket, the hot water outlet 39 leading to the place of use. The burner fire chamber 61 is surrounded by spaces fed with combustion air by a fan 15 driven by motor 14 drawing air past a damper 96 and delivering it tangentially to the fire chamber in whirling vortex fashion through passage 80, over a baffle 63 through apertured cone 58, and past a flamedeflecting cone 62. The burner has spark ignition electrodes 57 connected to a magneto 17 on the shaft of motor 14 which also drives a fuel pump 16. The motor 14 operates under the control of a thermostat 9. Damper 96 is automatically opened by oil pressure derived from the fuel pump.
