WATER HEATER I Filed 001,. 11, 1959 f i HI 0% i In (Z qii-itl W 12 25 11 INVENTOR.
A ORNEY.
Patented Dec. 24, 1940 NI TED STATE 5.
' T OFFICE 3 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in water heating apparatus and the principal objects of my invention are directed to the provision of a water heater which is constructed from a relatively few parts which are easily and readily assembled so as to make it all the more possible to provide a low cost heater.
According to the invention, the parts are so constructed and so arranged as to facilitate the quick heating of water with a low fuel consumption, and thereby to provide a low cost of operation.
It is another object of my invention to provide a novel and improved device which may be made more economically and with fewer operations in the manufacture of parts, as well as in assembly thereof, than prior devices known in the art.
Among the other various objects of my invention are: first, to simplify the construction;
second, to secure a high degree of accuracy in the performance of the work; third, to attain a high degree of speed in the construction of the device due to its simplified construction; fourth, to attain a flexibility or capability of adjustment by which a large variety of work can be produced on the same machine; and fifth, to attain an ease in adjustment and in repairs for the device.
With the foregoing and various other novel features and advantages and other objects of my invention as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will hereinafter be more particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed and more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a sectional elevational view through a water heater embodying the novel features of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of one type of fuel burner which may be used with the heater of my invention.
Referring now to the drawing more in detail the invention will be more fully described. Like numerals refer to like parts in different figures of the drawing.
A casing is formed from an outer annular wall 2 with which is associated an inner wall 4 spaced therefrom by means of upper and lower walls 6 and 8 to provide an annular water chamber 10 and a compartment within the inner wall 4, as
shown. The upper portion of wall 4 which is indicated by l2 inclines inwardly, substantially as shown.
An inner water compartment M which is. disposed within the inner wall 4 has spaced outer and innerwalls l6 and [8 which are connected to 5 each other by upper and lower walls 20 and 22. This compartment is supported by lugs 24 disposed thereon which rest on lugs 26 disposed upon the wall 4. In assembling the device, the inner water compartment may be moved upm wardly within the compartment and may be rotated sufiiciently to cause the lugs 24 to overlie the lugs 26.
The outer wall N5 of the inner water compartment inclines outwardly and upwardly from its lower end to a point intermediate its ends so as to provide a gradually narrowing passageway 28 between it and the wall 4. The upper portion of said'wall I6 is disposed relative to the wall portion I2 to carry out the narrowing passageway effect. 01
Theinner wall l8 inclines inwardly and upwardly, to form a tapering space l9 with the upper wall inclining outwardly all as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
A base 30 at the lower end of wall 2 is adapted to support a burner 32. The burner 32 is a gas burner and has two or more concentric hollow portions 34 and 36 provided with outlets for gas. Any other type of'burner may be employed if it is desired. 30;
Horizontally extending fins or ribs 38 are provided on the wall It. These are disposed in the passageway 28. Other fins 40 extend inwardly from wall [8. The products of combustion flow upwardly through passageway 28 and space I9 35 so that heat is absorbed by fins 38 and 40 and transferred to the water within compartment [4. Also heat is absorbed by wall 4 and transferred to water in space H].
The fins and narrowing passageways and space l9 function to restrict the fiow of gases to bring about the desired heat transfer to the water. A baflle 42 at the upper end of space l9 has an upper plate 44 and outlets 46 which tend to restrict the flow of hot gases. A dome 48 at the upper side of the heater has an outlet for connecting the same to a flue pipe or the like.
The arrangement is such that the bafile 42 directs the flow of hot gases onto connections 54 and 56 which tends to increase the efiiciency of the heater by utilizing such gases which would go to waste were they to flow directly out the flue.
As stated above, the inner water compartment I4 is easily inserted within the compartment 55 formed by the inner walls and is supported by means of engaging lugs 24 and 26. To center the compartment I4, abutments or bosses 50 may be provided on some one of the ribs 38 which engage the wall 4.
A tube 52 extends downwardly in the inner compartment l4 and said compartment is connected to the water space ID by connections 54.
A connection 56 extends outwardly from the water space Itat the upper side of the heater by connection 60 and a connection 58 leads into the water space at the lower side of the heater. By means of the connections, the water heater may be connected to a hot water storage tank or to the cold water supply and to the hot water system whereby in the operation of the heater water circulates in and through the heater wherein it is heated.
While I have described the invention in great detail and with respect to the present preferred form thereof, it is-not desired to be limited thereto embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. The present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects as illustrative and notrestrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description; and all changes'which come within the meaning and range of equivalency of the claims are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
