Abstract
Pantothenaldehyde or acetals thereof are prepared by reacting a -hydroxy-b ,b -dimethyl-g -hydroxy butyryl amide with acrolein or acetals thereof. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of solvents which are inert to the reactants, e.g. absolute ethanol or methanol and with heating and stirring. The hydroxyamides employed may be prepared by reacting a - hydroxy - b ,b - dimethyl - butyrolactone with dry ammonia gas in a solvent, e.g. methanol; alternatively the solid lactone may be used in absence of solvent. In examples: (1) a -hydroxy-b ,b -dimethyl butyrolactone is reacted with dry NH3 whilst cooled with ice, the hydroxy amide formed is dissolved in absolute ethanol and reacted with acrolein at 35-40 DEG C. yielding pantothenaldehyde; (2) the acrolein in (1) is replaced by its dimethyl acetal resulting in the formation of pantothenaldehyde dimethyl acetal; the diethyl acetal may be formed similarly.
