Abstract

693,517. Locking nuts. AEROQUIP CORPORATION. Jan. 25, 1951 [Feb. 17, 1950], No. 1973/51. Class 89 (i) [Also in Group XXVIII] In a coupling, e.g. a pipe coupling, wherein a nut retained on a part 13 is screwed on to a part 2 and brought into automatic engagement with a locking device provided on the part 2 to prevent unintentional backward rotary movement of the nut due to vibration, the device comprises a ring 28 having circumferentially-arranged and closely-spaced pawl-teeth 20 so that a number of the teeth can simultaneously engage ratchet teeth 21 of the nut. The ring 28 may be connected by fingers 31 in axially-movable relationship with a ring 29, the rings being urged apart by a wavelike ring spring 30. The nut may comprise inner and outer parts 6, 7 connected by a quickaction screw-thread 22 of opposite hand to the screwthread 5 which engages that of the part 2, the part 7 having at one end the teeth 21 and at the other end a flange 26 axially-movable in an annular recess 24 of the part 7. Relative rotation of the parts 6, 7 causes the free end 27 of the part 7 to clear the teeth 21 and the flange 26 to abut a flange 25 of the part 7 so that the parts are locked together and then screwed as a unified structure on to the part 2. To effect uncoupling, rotation of the part in 7 the opposite direction causes the part to move axially relatively to the part 6 until the flange 26 abuts a flange 23 of the part 7 and the end 27 presses the teeth 20, 21 out of engagement whereby the two parts are then again constrained to rotate together.
