Class 44 In latch mechanism including an independent safety striker plate, the latter comprises a lever 14 formed with two parallel limbs 16 and 17, one limb 16 having a hook-nose 24 projecting over or towards the second limb 17 which is itself flared outwardly or cambered at its end adjacent the hook nose. In the arrangement shown, as applied to latching mechanism for bonnets of road vehicles, the striker plate which is pivoted at 15 to a frame 12, as adapted to be engaged by a bar 19 attached to a bonnet reinforcement 11. The pivot point 15 may include friction washers, or the striker plate may be loaded by a spring 23. The striker plate is moved to permit withdrawal of the bar 19, by means of a button 22. Main locking means 13 for the bonnet may be of any known form.
