Abstract

771,907. Latch fastenings. HARTWELL, C., [trading as HARTWELL AVIATION SUPPLY CO.]. April 1, 1955, No. 9604/55. Class 44. A latch structure includes a pivotable handle member 12 having a fulcrum axis near one end, a latching member 16 pivotally connected at said one end immediately beyond said fulcrum axis and extending round and past said fulcrum axis towards the other end of said handle member, said latching member having means 18 at its extremity for engaging a keeper 6, and a trigger member 21 pivotally mounted in said handle member and adapted to retain said latching member in its keeper engaging position. The handle member 12 is of channel shape in cross-section and is pivotally mounted by means of a pin 14 on a door or panel structure 1, so that in its closed position it fills a slot 7 in the door or panel structure. A pair of the latching members 16 are pivotally connected to the handle member by a journal 15 and are connected together by spacers 17. The keeper engaging means 18 are hooked portions. The latching members are urged away from the handle member 12 by a spring 19 which is coiled around the journal 15 and which engages one of the spacers 17 at one end and the handle member 12 at the other end. The trigger member 21 is pivotally mounted between the flanges of the handle member and fills a slot 20 in the handle member in the closed position of the latch structure. The trigger member is provided with flanges which have hooked ends 24 which engage the keeper 6 to retain the handle in its slot 7 and the latching members 16 in engagement with the keeper. The trigger member is biased by a spring 23 and when its end nearest the free end of the handle is depressed, the hooked ends 24 become disengaged from the keeper 6 and the handle can then move upwardly hut of its slot under the pressure of the spring 19 and the latching members 16 become disengaged from the keeper. In a modification the hooked ends of the trigger member may engage a keeper pin carried by the latching members between their ends instead of engaging the keeper 6.
