Abstract

689,402. Scoop-arm machines. OWEN FOUNDATION, Inc. Aug. 16, 1950 [Aug. 23, 1949], No. 20375/50. Class 68(i) [Also in Group XXX] In a scoop-arm load-handling machine, a second pair of arms B, pivoted to the main arms L at 35 and carrying the bucket G, are luffed relative to the main arms by a pair of hydraulic rams 64 which, together with the independently controlled main arm luffing rams 40, effect digging, lifting and dumping movements of the bucket as indicated by the various dotted line positions. Movement of arms B is limited by pairs of stops 32a, 32b on arms L; and movement of arms L is limited in one direction by a pair of stops S, and in the other direction by a pair of cooperating cylinders (not shown), secured to the ends of each of a pair of cushioning springs 53, and arranged to abut against one another just before the springs are fully compressed against a pair of stops 60. Each spring 53 is located on a guide rcd 54 which slides in a pair of slots in the associated stop 60. The compressed springs are utilized to effect the initial return movement of the arms past their dead centre position, when the single acting ram 40 is relieved of pressure, whereafter the arms lower gravitationally. The machine is stated to be suitable for attachment to either a tractor (as shown) or to a self-loading vehicle. A canopy 86 secured to arms L serves to protect the operator from falling material when thebucket is over his head.
