Abstract

1,192,039. Jib cranes. BALDWIN-LIMAHAMILTON CORP. 24 Nov., 1967 [1 March, 1967], No. 53513/67. Heading B8B. [Also in Divisions G1 and G3] A control system for a telescopic boom crane having a base section of the crane boom pivotally mounted for movement in a vertical plane and a cable extending from an extensible and retractable section of the boom to a winch for changing the boom angle comprises means for extending and retracting the latter boom section relative to the base section, means for sensing the resultant changes in the boom angle, the winch and adjusting means interconnecting the sensing means and the winch for automatically actuating the winch to maintain a selected boom angle. The winch 31 is driven by a hydraulic motor 36 controlled by a valve 40, the boom angle being selected by operation of a lever 47, and the extensible and retractable boom section is moved relative to the base section by rams 21 controlled by a valve 57 operated by a lever 58, there being provided a valve 59 to limit elevation of the boom, a pilot operated check valve 62 to prevent undesired retraction of the rams 21, and a restirictor valve 64 to control the maximum rate of retraction of the boom. Changes in the boom angle are sensed by a linkage 65, a spring-biased lost motion link 75 being provided to permit rapid movement of the lever 47. In a second embodiment, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the linkage 65 is replaced by a hydraulic pilot system including a pair of balanced displacement type double acting hydraulic cylinder and piston units operating the valve 40 by the difference in pressure in the cylinder ends consequential upon the boom being moved from the selected angle. In a third embodiment, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), the linkage 65 is replaced by an electrohydraulic control system including an electrohydraulic pilot valve controlling the valve 40 and oprated by the potential differential across its terminals which are respectively connected to a potentiometer operated by the lever 47 and a potentiometer operated by movement of the boom as its angle is varied.
