Abstract

689,047. Moulding and wrapping toffee &c. ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH), Ltd. March 20, 1951 [March 21, 1950], No. 6935/50. Class 87 (ii). [Also in Group XXX] Relates to apparatus of the type in which a moulding device forms a continuous series of articles of toffee or like plastic material which leave the device as a string of articles connected by small portions of material and comprises a conveyer 21 having a series of pockets 22 of a shape appropriate to the articles, the conveyer being adapted to receive the string directly from the moulding device with successive articles passing into successive pockets and to carry the articles towards a wrapping machine, and means for transferring the articles in succession from the conveyer to the wrapping elements of the wrapping machine. The moulding device 12 forms the articles from the rope of plastic material 11 by passing it through the nip between two rollers 13, 14 each with cavities 16 which shape the articles e.g. toffees. The toffees, still connected by small portions of material, pass in a string down a guide channel 19 and enter successively the pockets 22. The conveyer, which may be long enough to allow the toffees to cool, carries them in front of a pusher 24 which reciprocates across the conveyer in time with the movement of the pockets. The pusher carries a knife 31 which cuts the material joining the toffees, which are thus pushed one by one into a pocket 28 of an intermittently rotating pocket wheel 29, the movement of the following string of toffee being restrained by a side guide 20. As the toffee is pushed into the pocket 28 it carries with it a wrapper 26 cut from a web 27 of wrapping material. Instead of the knife 31 an auxiliary pusher may be used. Specification 360,032, [Group XVII], is referred to in connection with the return movement of the reciprocating pusher, and Specification 621,500, [Group XXX], in connection with controlling the movement of a portion of the conveyer near the wrapping machine.
