Class 123 (i) [Also in Group XXVI] A lid 3 is secured to a cooking vessel 1 by a split rubber, &c. sealing ring 5 which is moulded or fixed to a spring metal, &c. backing strap 12 and is housed within a split retaining band 11 having upper and lower retaining flanges 14, 15, the said band 11 being fitted with locking means comprising a strap 23 in the form of an arcuate loop which is hingedly engaged at one end 24 by a locking lever 20 and is secured at the other end to an adjustable anchorage 19. The lever 20 is pivoted at. 21 to the band 11, near one end 16 of the latter, and is provided with a keeper 25. also pivoted to said band; the anchorage 19 is mounted on the other end 16 of the band. As shown, the sealing ring has two annular grooves 7, 8 adapted to receive, respectively, the upper rolled edge 2 of the vessel 1 and a bend at the junction of the lid 3 with its skirt 4 and to space the said vessel and lid, as at 4a, so that a ridge 9 between the grooves is open to the interior of the vessel. Preferably the inner and outer faces of the sealing ring are eccentric, with the greatest thickness at the split 6. The band 11, strap 12 and ring 5 have registering holes 11a, 12a, 5a to accommodate one or more valves such as a rubber blow-out plug valve 26 and a spring-loaded alarm and safety valve 33, the latter comprising a valve head 28 disposed within a tubular stem 30 provided with an outlet 34 which, by rotation of an external sleeve 32, may be put into communication with a whistle 31 mounted on said sleeve or a vent 35 in the latter.
