688,019. Internal shoe-drum brakes. HIERONYMI, B. Nov. 26, 1951. No. 27711/51. Class 103 (i). In an internal shoe-drum brake having shoes 3 applied to the drum 1 by an annular expansible actuator 4, each end of each shoe has a circumferential slot 14 within which slide projections 13 on arms 11 of bell-cranks 9 pivoted on pins 8 extending between the fixed back plate 5 and a disc 6, guiding the shoes laterally. The other arm 10 of the bell-cranks 9 extends substantially radially and engages a radially extending surface 12 on the shoe. When the shoes are engaged with the drum 1 by the actuator 4, they tend to move circumferentially according to the direction of drum rotation. The surface 12 acting on arm 10 rotates the bell-crank so as to cause the projections 13 to press the shoes into tighter engagement with the brake drum. Springs 15 disposed between connections on the bell-cranks and the shoe rims have a return action on the bell-cranks. The shoes are guided laterally by their ends extending through slots 17 in arcuate plates 19. The plates 19 carry one-way mechanisms comprising ratchettoothed pins 20 and resilient locking members 22 which act as automatic clearance adjusters for the shoes.
