Abstract

904,072. Drum brakes. GIRLING Ltd. March 13, 1961 [March 12, 1960], No. 8814/60. Class 103 (1). In a drum brake having two independent means for separating the shoes, adjustment of one means is effected during operation of that means by a spring energized by the other means when the travel exceeds a predetermined value. When the brake is applied mechanically by movement of a wedge, mounted on a doubleacting hydraulic actuator housing 14, to move tappets 12 outwards, pegs 17, 18 mounted thereon separate a pawl 34 and ratchet 27 to rotate the ratchet wheel 27, if the movement exceeds a predetermined clearance 36, which loads a part circumferential spring having tongues 28 in wheel 27 and 33 in one of a pair of cam gears 20, such that an hydraulic brake application moving the shoes 24 apart the spring rotates the gears 20 to allow their cam portions 23 to take up the required adjustment.
