Abstract

1447358 Internal shoe drum brakes; wedge actuators GIRLING Ltd 9 Nov 1973 [9 Nov 1972] 51735/72 Heading F2E An internal shoe drum brake has its respective brake shoes moved by respective tappets 4 operable by a wedge assembly comprising an actuating shaft 6 and a wedge member 7; the wedge member 7 has inclined faces 9 and between these faces 7 and inclined faces 10 on the respective tappets 4 there are interposed respective rollers 8 retained and guided by a cage 11 movable with the wedge member 7 and guided in a bore 5 in the housing 1 of the actuator; the cage 11 is of generally U-shaped outline with a pair of arms 23 directed from a bridge portion 24 and the bridge portion 24 is provided with flanges 25 to facilitate movement of the cage 11 in bore 5 and has a central opening 26 through which projects actuating shaft 6. Each arm 23 is provided with two openings 13 and the openings 13 are aligned to receive axially aligned spigots 14 on the rollers 8. A compression spring 27 acts between abutment plates 28, 33 to urge the wedge member 7 into an inoperative position defined by engagements between shoulders 30 on the cage 11 and complementary shoulders 31 in the housing. The shaft 6 is for connection to an actuator preferably of the air-operated type and when the member 7 is displaced axially in the application of the brake the cage 11 also moves axially. The wedge member 7 can rock or tilt to compensate for unequal tappet movement and such movement is accompanied by corresponding movement of the cage 11. As shown, one tappet 4 incorporates an automatic, adjuster which forms the subject of copending Specification 1,447,359.
