Abstract
687,452. Labelling machines. WEISS, J. May 25, 1951. [May 27, 1950] No. 12329/51. Class 73. [Also in Group XXX] Labels are applied to cylindrical articles which are conveyed through a machine into contact with a label transfer drum at which point they are rotated to apply the label. A suction transfer drum 4 removes a label from container 5, passes it over a gumming roller 7 into contact with the articles on the conveyer 2. A counter-bearing drum 8 is adjustably mounted on an arm 11 and resiliently held by a spring 12 against articles 3 on the conveyer. A star wheel 28 releases the articles in timed relation and the cylinder 8 is adjusted so that articles are held between adjacent rollers 9 which are freely rotatable on the cylinder 8. Hence by adjusting the speeds of the transfer drum 4, counter-bearing cylinders 8, and conveyer 2 the article is held in contact with the drum and caused to rotate about its own axis to strip a label from the drum. If the drum 4 is rotated in the opposite direction to that shown, the period of contact is longer and larger labels can be applied, and, to apply a label completely round an article, the cylinder 8 is rotated intermittently. A device 32 to prevent operation when no label is present can be provided.
