Class 73 A labelling machine for applying labels to flat-faced bottles has a label delivery suction drum 6, Fig. 2, and a pressure drum 16 rotatably mounted on opposite sides of the bottle conveyer 10 to form a nip through which each bottle is passed, the peripheral speeds of the two drums being equal to the conveyer speed so that a label is rolled on to one flat face of each bottle, the machine being also provided with means for applying labels to an opposite or another flat face of each bottle. The conveyer may pass two labelling stations in turn, one labelling one flat face and the other labelling another flat face. The two labelling stations may lie at opposite sides of the conveyer or, as shown in Fig. 2, they may lie at the same side with turning mechanism 19 between the stations to rotate a bottle already labelled on one face at one station into position to be labelled on another face at the next station. This rotation, which may be effected by a rotary star wheel or pocket, may be through 180 degrees for labelling opposite faces of the bottle or through a lesser angle, e.g. 90 degrees in the case of labelling adjacent faces of rectangular or square section bottles 201, as shown in Fig. 17. As shown in Figs. 2 and 17 the two labelling stations are identical and a marking device 30, e.g. as described in Specification 809,463, is provided for applying a date and other mark to the ungummed portion of each label carried by the drum 6A. Moving bands 28, 29, Fig. 2, firmly press both labels to each bottle. Gummed labels are fed to the drums 6, 6A by the mechanism described in Specification 777,133. According to the Provisional Specification the pressure drum may itself be constituted by a second suction delivery drum so that labels are simultaneously applied on opposite faces of the bottles.
