Abstract

685,897. Wrapping newspapers. POPE, D. H. April 2. 1951 [May 4. 1950], No. 7525/51. Class 94(i) A machine for wrapping newspapers includes a rotatable roller, a longitudinal slot extending from one end of the roller; means for sequentially feeding an edge portion of each of a number of newspapers into the said slot, and means for sequentially feeding an edge portion of each of a number of wrappers into the said slot, at one position along said slot; means for rotating the rollers; means for guiding the newspaper and wrapper during rotation ot the roller m such manner as to cause them to be rolled about the roller; means for moving the rolled newspaper and wrapper longitudinally along the slotted portion of the roller to another position at or near to the end thereof; means for applying adhesive to the flap of the wrapper in the said other position; and means for pressing the flap to which adhesive has been applied to the wrapper during further rotation of the roller. A second newspaper and associated wrapper is fed to the slot in the said one position prior to, and is rolled about the roller by, such further rotation, subsequent longitudinal sliding movement imparted to the said second newspaper and associated wrapper being adapted to eject from the end of the roller the first rolled and wrapped newspaper. A tube 13 is mounted in bearings 12 and has a longitudinal slot 14 formed from one end thereof for a length about twice the width of the newspapers to be wrapped. Within the tube 13 is a clampmg tube 17 having a longitudinal slot 18 formed from one end thereof, said slotted portion extending about half way along the slotted portion of the tube 13 and the unslotted portion having a radial stud 19 extending through an arcuate slot 20 in that part of the tube 13 between the bearings 12. A newspaper 30 is fed down a chute 35 and simultaneously a wrapper 31 is fed over a spring- urged pivoted plate 33 through the slots 14 and 18, then in register, at a position near the unslotted end of the tube. A stop 28 on a crank 27 is then moved out of engagement with the stud 20 on the clamping tube 17 and a torsion spring 21 moves the tube 17 relative to the tube 13 to clamp the newspaper and wrapper. The tube 13 is then rotated two revolutions to wrap the newspaper and wrapper around it in cooperation with the plate 33, a spring-urged pivoted plate 36 and a spring-urged guide plate 39; the stop 28 again engaging the stud 19, towards the end of the second revolution of the tube 13, to bring the slots once more in register. An ejector collar 22 about the roller 13 is then moved longitudinally therealong to push the rolled newspaper and wrapper to an end position on said tube with a flap of the wrapper lying on the plate 33. A gumming pad 43 is then moved from a gum bath on to said pad and back, at the same time a second newspaper and wrapper is fed to the tube at the first position therealong. The tube is then rotated again and the gummed flap of the first wrapper is pressed in place while the second wrapper and newspaper are rolled. Movement of the ejector collar 22 to move the second rolled newspaper and wrapper to the gumming position serves to eject the first wrapped newspaper from the tube.
