The inclined surfaces of elements 21 serve to produce an endwise pressure on opposite ends of the lower bands and thus to arch the bands outwardly and downwardly from the stack to separate the central portions of the band. l

The bands are withdrawn from the magazine one by one by suction arms 22 on a rotating turret 23 which has a vertical band removing movement and a rotary conveying movement produced yby means which will now be described.

The turret is carried by a shaft 24 `and driven v step by step through gears 25, 26, 27 and 28 by a Geneva wheel 29 actuated by roller 30 on gear 31 driven from the main drive of the machine through spiral gears 32 and shaft 33. The turret as a whole is given its vertical movement as more fully disclosed in the above mentioned application, by a cam lever 34 mounted .onshaft 35 and controlled by a cam roller 36 operated by a suitable cam on shaft 37.

The band B is folded about the cigar C by folders 38 supported on arms 39, pivoted on stud 40 secured to slide 41 which imparts vertical movement to the folders through the levers 39 to fold the band along the opposite' vertical sides of the cigar. The slide 41 is given vertical movement by a link 42 connected to a lever 43 pivoted on shaft 44 and carrying a roller 45 engaging a cam on shaft 37. The lowermost position of the slide and the band folding parts carried thereby is indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1.

v For the purpose of moistening the band B, there is provided a moistening element 46 in the form of a small roller of yielding moisture absorbing material such as felt, rotatablymounted on a reduced end portion of a carrier bar 47 having reciprocating .end-wise motion on a bracket 48 slidably mounted on guide rods 49,'the reciprocating movement being derived from a bell crank lever 50, pivoted on shaft 37 and actuated by a lever 51 pivoted at 52 and carrying a roller 53 Yengaging with a cam on shaft 37, said lever 51 being linked by a link 53 with the bell crank lever vr50 which in turn is connected by a link 54 to the bracket 48.

For the purpose of preventing rubbing of the roller 46 as it passes the liquid supply device now to be described, a moistening wheel 55 supported in a reservoir 56 driven by a shaft 57 is provided which is given a movement toward and away from the path of the bar 47 by a cam 58 resting on a stationary surface 59. The shaft 57 is driven through gears 60 and 61 and a chain 62 from the drive shaft 37. The moistening wheel has its peripheral portion covered with a suitable yielding moisture absorbent material such as felt. The timing of cam 59 is such that the moisture supplying wheel 55 is moved into contact with the moistener roller 46 after the roller has been moved alongside the surface of the wheel 55.

' For the purpose of yieldingly pressing the moisture applying element 46 against the band B and also for the purpose of permitting it to yieldingly follow the contour of the folder 38 while squeezing the band against the same, as shown in Fig. 2, the bar 47 is pivotally mounted by means of pin 63 on the bracket 48 and is resilientlydrawn into band and holder engaging position by a spring 64 anchored to said bar and the bracket 48.

After the band has been folded about three sides of the cigar by the vertical movement of the folders 38, the band ends outstanding are overlapped by folding means including a roller 65, as disclosed in the above mentioned application, which roller is given movement across the lower side of the cigar in a directionparallel to the direction of cigar movement on the conveyor 11. The folded roller is given this movement by a rack 66 slidably supported by means not shown and actuated by a gear segment 67 engaging teeth on said rack, the gear segment receiving movement from a shaft 68 connected with the main drive of the machine. At the next station of the cigar on the conveyor shown at the right, Fig. 2, there is provided a boss 69 on a plate 70 which serves to maintain sealing pressure on the cigar. At the edge of the plate nearest the banding station a bevelled slot 71 is provided for receiving the roller at which point the roller is withdrawn from contact with the cigar, thus maintaining sealing pressure on the cigar overlap from the banding station to the next station.

In the operation of the improved banding mechanism the moistening or liquid applying element 46, after receiving moisture from the supply wheel 55 reciprocates to a position underlying the band end at the position in which the band extending straight is clamped between the turret arm 22 and the cigar but spaced below said band end. As the folders 38` move downwardly transversely of the vertical sides of the cigar to lay the band in U formation about the same, the band is forced into contact with the band moistening element and during the continued movement of the folders 38, the curved rear surface 72 `of the folder 38 swings the folder away from the cigar against the action of spring 64 and drags the band over said roller which due to its rotatable mounting is in rolling Contact with the band. It is noted that since the band is clamped against the cigar and partially wrapped around the same prior to moistening, there is no chance for the band to be displaced by the engagement of the moistening element with the band. It is also noted that due to the location and movement of the moistening mechanism to the rear of and below the turret, the operator of the machine who is ordinarily to the left of the machine as shown in Fig. 1, has easy access to the band applying elements and to the cigar.

What is claimed is:

1. In a vcigar banding machine, the combination With a cigar support, of means for wrapping a band around three sides of the cigar with the ends outstanding, means for folding said outstanding ends on the remaining side of the cigar, and mechanism for applying liquid to one end of the band while the band is being wrapped around said three sides.

2. In a cigar banding machine, the combination with a cigar support, of means for wrapping a band around three sides of the cigar with the ends outstanding, means .for folding said outstanding ends on the remaining side of the cigar, and mechanism for applying liquid to one end of the band While the band is being wrapped around said three sides, said mechanism including devices having a to and fro movement for moving a liquid carrying element against the band end during the said wrapping.

3. In a cigar banding machine, the combination with a cigar support, means for holding a band transversely of the cigar, band applying means for wrapping the band about three sides of the cigar into U formation, and liquid applying means providing an operating element movable endwise alongside said support in and out of the path of movement of one of the band ends as it is being carried around the cigar,'to apply liquid to the band end as a result of said movement.

In a cigar banding machine, the combination with a cigar support, means forholding a band transversely of the cigar,band applying means for carrying the ends of the band about the cigar, and liquid applying means providing an operating element in thepath of movement of one of the band ends as it is being carried around the cigar to apply liquid to the band end as a result of said movement, said moistening means including a carrier for said element and mechanism for giving said carrier to and fro movement lengthwise of the cigar to carry said elementinto and out of liquid applying position. 5. In a cigar banding machine, the combination with a cigar support, means for holding a band transversely of the cigar, band applying means for carrying the ends of the bandabout the cigar, and liquid applying means providing an operating element movable endwise'alongside said support in and out ofthe path of movement of one of the band ends as it is being carried around the cigar, to apply liquid to the band end as a result of said movement, said liquid applying means including a source of supply of liquid, and mechanism giving said element to and fro movement between said source and said operating position.

6. In a cigar banding machine, the combination with a cigar support, means for holding a band transversely of the cigar,` band applying means, for carrying the ends of the band about the cigar, and liquid applying means providing an operating element movable endwise alongside said support in and out of the path of movement of one of the band ends as it is being carried around the cigar, to apply liquid to the hand end as a result of said movement, said liquid applying means including a liquid reservoir, a liquid supply wheel, and mechanism for giving said element to and fro movement first into liquid receiving contact with said wheel and then into liquid applying position.

7. In a cigar banding machine, the combination with a support for a cigar, of means for wrapping bands on a cigar on said support including folders moving transversely along opposite sides of the cigar to lay the band thereon about the same and liquid applier cooperating with the folder to squeeze a portion of the band between said folder and liquid applier.

8. In a cigar banding machine, the combination with a support for a cigar, of means for wrapping bands on a cigar on said support including a folder moving transversely of the cigar to lay a portion of the band thereon, a liquid applier cooperating with the folder to squeeze a portion of the band between said folder and liquid applier, and mechanism for moving said applier lengthwise of the cigar into and out of the path of one end of the band operated on by the folder to cause the folder to drag the band end over said applier.

9. In a banding machine, the combination with an article support, of means for applyingv a band to said article, and means for applying liquid to one end of said band while portions of the band are in motion during the applying operation, said means including a source of liquid supply and a liquid applying element having endwise movement along side said support from said reservoir to the band.

10. .In a cigar banding machine, the combination with a cigar support of means for wrapping a band on the cigar, and a band moistener movable endwise alongside said support in and out of operating position in the path of movement of one end` of the band during wrapping of the band around the vertical sides of the cigar.

l1.v In a cigar banding machine, the combination with a support for a cigar, of means for wrapping bands about said cigar, said means including a folder moving transversely of the cigar to lay a portion of the band thereon, a liquid applier cooperating with the folder to press a portion of the band against said folder, a carrier having ato and fronmovement to transport the liquid applier to and from band engaging position supporting said liquid applier, said liquid applier being pivotally mounted on said carrier and a spring connection between the applier and the carrieroperating to press said applier toward said folder at band engaging position.

12. `In a labeling machine, the combination with a support for -an article,of means for wrapping labels about an article, said means including a folder moving transversely of the articleto lay a portion of the label along one side thereof, a liquid applier cooperating with the` folder to press a portion of the label against said folder, a source of liquid supply, a carrier for said applier having a to ,and fro movement to move said applier endwise alongside said support from said source to label engaging position.

13. In a cigar banding machine, the combination with a cigar support, of means for folding a band about said cigar, a liquid carrying roll, means for holding said roll against one end of the band for rolling contact therewith during the folding of the band, a source of supply moistening liquid, having a moisture carrying supply wheel, said holding means including a carrier having a to and fro movement to carry said roller endwise alongside said support into and out of contact with said supply Wheel.

14. In a cigar banding machine, the combination with a cigar support, of means for folding a band about said cigar, a liquid carrying roll, movable alongside said support in and out of applying position means for holding said roll against one end of the band for rolling contact therewith during the folding of the band, said roller having at least its peripheral portion made of yielding liquid absorbent material.

15. In an article banding machine, the combination with a conveyor carrying sets of coacting grippers for supporting articles and carrying them to a band applying position, yielding means pressing one gripper of a set towards the other to yieldingly grip the article, band applying means for operating on the articles, and means for locking said grippers in xed article gripping position during the band applying operation.

16. In a cigar banding machine, the combination with a conveyor carrying sets of coacting grippers for supporting and carrying cigars to a band applying position, yielding means pressing onegripper of a set towards the other to yieldingly grip the cigar, band applying means for operating on the articles, means for locking said grippers in xed cigar gripping position during the band applying operation, said means comprising a gripper actuating device connected to said grippers and carried by said conveyor, and a relatively stationary element arranged to operate said actuating device.

17. In a wrapping machine, the combination with a conveyor carrying setsef vcoacting grippers for supporting and carrying articles to a` Wrapping position, yielding means pressing one gripper of a set towards the other to yieldingly grip the article, wrapper applying means for operating on the articles, means for locking said grippers in xed article gripping position during the Wrapping operation, said means comprising an arm carried by said conveyor and connected to said grippers operable to hold the same closed on the article, and means off the conveyor arranged to operate said arm.

18. The combination with conveyor means for intermittently moving articles from one station to another, of band applying means for Wrapping a band around the article and overlapping the ends of said band at one station, said band applying means including a folder having movement parallel to the direction of movement of said conveyor to lay the last folded end of the band over the other end of the band, and means for giving said folder movement with the article substantially to the next station to maintain pressure on the overlap during said movement.

19. The combination with conveyor means for intermittently moving articles from one station to another, of band applying means for Wrapping a band around the article and overlapping the ends of said band at one station, said band applying means including a folder having movement parallel to the direction of movement of said conveyor to lay the last folded end of the band over the other end of the band, and means for giving said folder movement With the article substantially to the next station to maintain pressure on the overlap during said movement, a plate having a boss arranged to exert pressure on the band overlap at said next station and folder operating means coacting with said plate to cause the folder to withdraw from contact with the .cigar band substantially at the point where the boss begins to exert pressure on the overlap.

20. In a banding machine, the combination with a support for an article, of means for supplying hands and folding them around the article, and a liquid applying means cooperating with said means to render one end of the band adhesive, said applying means comprising a carrier bar, a liquid retaining element on said bar adjacent the end thereof, a source of supply of liquid, and means for giving said bar reciprocating endWise movement alongside said support from said source of supply to band engaging position.

21. In a banding machine, the combination with a support for an article, of means for supplying bands and folding them around the article, and a liquid applying means cooperating with said means to render one end of the band adhesive, said means comprising a carrier bar, a liquid retaining element on said bar adjacent the end thereof, a source of supply of liquid, and means for giving said bar reciprocating endWise movement alongside said support from said source of supply to band engaging position, said liquid retaining element consisting of a roller of yielding liquid absorbent material arranged on said bar for rolling Contact With said band.

22. In a cigar banding machine, the combination with a support for a cigar, of means for supplying bands and folding them around the cigar, and a liquid applying means comprising a liquid retaining element, of a liquid supply device having a moistened surface, means for giving said element a to and fro movement alongside said support from band engaging position to a position alongside said surface but separated therefrom, and means for giving said element and device relative movement transversely to the direction 'of said to and fro movement to bring them into engagement.
