1306676 Making packets HAUNI-WERKE KORBER & CO KG 1 June 1970 [15 July 1969 11 Nov 1969] 35469/69 and 55195/69 Heading B5D [Also in Division B8] In a packaging machine comprising hollow mandrels 4 carried by a continuously rotating drum 3, the mandrels 4 are intermittently rotated about their respective axes 7 so as to fold wrapper material therearound to form packets. Tin foil 9 from a reel 11 is severed by a cutting device 12 and fed to a mandrel 4 by a suction drum 8 which initially rotates at a speed higher than the rotational speed of the mandrel 4 and which, after folding has commenced, rotates at the same speed as the mandrel 4. The mandrel 4 is carried on a carrier (41, Figs. 16, 17, not shown) which supports rollers (96, 97) engaging fixed cams (98, 99) so as to rotate the carrier (41) to a position where a toothed rack (68) on the carrier (41) engages a fixed toothed segment (69) and is constrained to rotate once thereby. The leading edge of the tin foil 9 is held on the mandrel 4 by heads 47, 48 carried by respective levers 44, 46 pivoted to the carrier (41) and carrying rollers 79, 86 spring- urged into contact with cams 81, 87. The cam 81 is formed on an arm 82 pivoted to the carrier (41) and spring-urged into contact with a cam 84. A further lever 52 having a suction head 54 which holds the trailing edge of the tin foil 9, is pivoted to the drum 3 and has a roller 88 spring-urged into contact with a cam 89. The rotation of the mandrel 4 starts at a position P 2 (see Fig. 1) and during this rotation the lever 44 is pivoted away from the mandrel 4 to allow the suction head 54 of the lever 52 to place the trailing edge of the foil 9 over the leading edge thereof. The drum 3 then rotates through positions P 3 , P 4 where the end of the foil 9 is folded to form the base of the packet. This folding is effected by a pair of cam-operated folders 118, 119 associated with the mandrel and which form side tucks in the foil 9, these tucks being pressed by a pair of resilient rollers 111, 112. The mandrel 4 then passes by a folder 129 carried by a pair of rotating wheels 127, 128 and operative to down-fold one flap at the packet-base, the other flap then being folded by a cam-operated folder 114. The drum 3 then passes through positions P 5 -P 10 where a paper blank 14 is fed to the mandrel 4 by a suction drum 13, the blank 14 being fed from a storage container 16 and being gummed by a gumming device 18. The blank 14 is folded around the tin foil 9 on the mandrel 4 in a manner analogous to that described above. (For Figs. 1 and 15. see next page.)
