Abstract
683,704. Vehicle wheels. S.A.G.A. SOC. APPLICAZIONI GOMMA ANTIVIBRANTI SOC. P. A. Jan. 25, 1950 [Jan. 25, 1949], No. 2013/50. Class 144 (i). In a resilient wheel having rubber shear blocks interposed between a middle flange and two external flanges, the middle flange being provided by the wheel part extending from the hub and the external flanges being on the rim, or vice versa, or the external flanges being connected by bolts coaxial in the rubber shear blocks, the parts are arranged so that any axial thrust from one wheel flange to another is taken up by a reaction in line therewith from the rubber blocks. Figs. 1 and 2 show a light - load pneumatic - tyred vehicle wheel in which the external flanges 4, 5 are integral with the tyre-receiving rim 6 while the middle flange is provided by a disc 3 which will be bolted at 8 to the hub. The flanges 4, 5 are shaped to provide projections 9 and recesses 10 so that the projections 11 on the disc 3 and provided with the rubber shear blocks 1; 2, can be passed axially through the recesses 10 of the flange 4 whereupon the disc 3 can be turned to cause the projections 11 to lie behind the projections 9 and finally the flange 4 is pressed inwardly to complete the assembly. The rubber blocks are bonded to the middle flange and their outer ends have plates 19, 20 bonded thereto with spigots 13, 14 to enter holes 15 in the external flanges 4, 5. Figs. 4 and 5 show a heavy-load vehicle wheel for railway or tramway use wherein the rubber shear blocks 22, 23 are bonded to discs 29, 30 formed with short radial lugs 31, 32. The discs 29, 30 are inserted in circular apertures provided in the projections 43, 44 of'the wheel rim flanges 35, 36; the apertures are notched at 33, 34 to allow passage of the lugs 31, 32 which thereafter are turned to lie behind the un-notched portion of the apertures on seatings 39, 40. The disc portion 24 of the wheel which is corrugated at 48 for strength and received in corresponding grooves in the hub plate 52a is inserted between the wheel rim flanges 35, 36 in the same manner as before. Spigots 27, 28 on the inner plates 25, 26 of the rubber blocks 22, 23 engage holes in the middle flange 24, Figs. 12 and 13 show a wheel rim having fully annular external flanges 82, 84. The flange 82 is separately formed so that the wheel disc portion 69 and the rubber shear blocks 55, 56 can be inserted in place adjacent the integral flange 84 and thereafter the separate flange 82 be secured by bolts 58 passing through the integral flange 84 and the rubber shear blocks to hold the separate flange 82 up to an annular seating 83 on the wheel rim 70.
