Class 39(iii) An electrode boiler comprises an electrode 12, normally partly submerged in water in a vessel 11, means for raising or lowering the water level in the vessel 11, and a water circulation pump 50 having its inlet communicating with the water below the minimum operating level thereof and its outlet communicating with a spout 54 immediately beneath the electrode 12. A jet of water is hence forced up into contact with the electrode 12. The level of water in the vessel may be regulated by automatic means as described in U.S. Specification 2,453,210, to which arrangement the pipes 20, 21 and 23 relate, or by alternative means, e.g. as described in Specification 193,405, [Class 39(iii)]. Boiler feed water is supplied from a pipe 57 either to a distributor 53, where it mixes with the water from the pump 50, or to the inlet of the pump 50, steam passing off at 15. The velocity of the jet may be regulated by a valve 56 on the outlet side of the pump 50, or by providing a variable speed drive for the pump 50. A shield 13 acts as the other terminal of the current supply, and the spout 54, which has a bored cap 55, has an earth connection 58 to the boiler shell. Alternatively the spout 54 may be of insulating material, e.g. hard glass. The electrode 12 is connected to a three phase supply, the other two electrodes being either in the same or separate boiler vessels. In the second case, the shield 13 surrounds the three electrodes, each of which has beneath it a spout communicating with the pump.
