Abstract

715,615. Electrode boilers. BATES, E. B. July 7, 1952 [April 5, 1951], No. 7871/51. Class 39 (3) An electrode boiler is gravity fed and the capacity of that part of the boiler which lies between the steam outlet and the lower end of the effective length of the electrodes is not greater than, and is preferably less than, the capacity of that part which lies between the inlet and the lower end of the effective length of the electrodes. Electrodes 23 are mounted in insulating bushes on a plate 25 at equally spaced intervals around the axis of a boiler 10 and have stems 24 surrounded by anti-flashover insulating sleeves 26 which space the exposed parts of the electrodes from the plate 25. A water inlet 12 is fed from a heater tank and a steam outlet 21 has shut-off and control valves 22, 29. Three phase current supply is indicated by an ammeter 18 and indicator lamps 19, and consumption is automatically controlled by the steam pressure which determines the extent to which the electrodes are immersed. The steam pressure is controlled by the head of the water feed. When using very hard water in the boiler, the electrodes may be supported on insulating rods or sleeves extending up from the bottom of the boiler so that the insulating bushes and at least the major portions of the sleeves are always immersed, thus preventing the formation of crystalline salts and precluding flashover.
