Abstract

283,544. Smith, L. V., and Waite, G. W. Jan. 13, 1927, [Convention date]. Heating by electricity.-The level of the liquid in contact with the electrodes varies with the steam pressure to control the current automatically. A central carbon electrode 3 is surrounded by a number of carbon electrodes 4 mounted in a metal base 1 screwed into the vessel containing the liquid to be heated. A metal cylinder 10 with perforations 11, 12 and screwed on to the base forms an electrode chamber in which steam is generated. The liquid in the vessel is heated chiefly by passage of heat through the walls of the cylinder 10. The top of the cylinder is protected against electrolytic action by a layer of steam when the element is fitted as shown. If fitted in a horizontal position a carbon disc is fitted for protection.
