The sides of the metal body may be ribbed to increase the heating surface. In a modification, the quartz tube is arranged in spiral form in the wall of a hollow cylindrical metal body. The conductivity of the oxide increases as the temperature rises so that the oxide co-operates with the resistance to produce the heating effect.
