Abstract

Zinc phthalocyanines in dispersible form are obtained by grinding crude zinc phthalocyanine in the dry state with a solvent-removable substratum, until a pigment of strong colour is produced, removing the substratum with a solvent, and, if desired, drying. Substrata specified are water-soluble compounds such as sodium meta-borate, sodium ferrocyanide, anhydrous calcium chloride, sodium carbonate, potassium aluminium sulphate, anhydrous barium chloride, finely - powdered sodium chloride, finely-powdered anhydrous sodium sulphate, ammonium chloride or sulphate, anhydrous boric acid, aromatic sulphonic acids or their alkali salts such as sulphanilic acid, anhydrous sodium and potassium hydroxides, sodium phenolate, and acetone-soluble compounds such as phthalic anhydride or p-toluene sulphonamide. The product is mainly b -modification but changes to a -modification on treatment with an aqueous solution, e.g. when removing the substratum, and if a strong greenish pigment is desired, this may be avoided by treating first with an organic liquid having a dissociation constant less than water, e.g. methyl or ethyl alcohol, acetaldehyde, acetone, dioxane, iso- and n-propyl alcohol, benzene, cyclohexanone, or benzonitrile. The liquid may be present during the grinding step, in quantity such that the mix is in powder form. Water-immiscible liquid such as benzene or benzine may be used but in quantity insufficient to form a non-aqueous phase. As an alternative to the organic liquid treatment, the dried product may be heated to 150-200 DEG C. In examples, a crude zinc phthalocyanine produced from phthalonitrile and zinc dust in presence of a -chloronaphthalene is subjected to the treatments described above, using some of the substrata and organic liquids there specified.
