Unter den wasserlöslichen Substraten seien anorganische Salze genannt, wie z. B. wasser freies Chlorealeium, wasserfreies Natriumcar- bonat, Natrium-Metaborat (Na.B0#,. 2H.0), Kaliumaluminiumsulfat, Ammonsulfat, Am monchlorid, Bariumehlorid, und insbeson dere wasserfreies ,Natriumferrocyanid, das sich leicht regenerieren lässt, und derglei chen;
Processes for the production of zinc phthaloeyanines in dispersible form. 1 Of the numerous known phthalocyanine dyes, it is known that only a few have achieved technical importance The main products available are copper phthalocyanine and metal-free phthalocyanine and some of their derivatives.
It is known that the phthalocyanines are initially obtained in a crystalline form in their synthesis, be it from phthalonitrile or its derivatives, be it from phthalic anhydride, phthalimide or o-dihalobenzenes with metal-donating compounds, which as pigment dyes because of their coarseness even after grinding into the usual grinding devices known today is not useful.
The usual method of converting the crude dye thus obtained into that which can be used as a pigment dye is to suspend or dissolve the crude dye in sulfuric acid and to precipitate it again by pouring it into water.
This process is associated with a polymorphic transformation in that the original ss-modification, so #, which is characterized by its X-ray diagram, changes into the so-called a-modification, which the latter provides a typically modified X-ray diagram. The covering power or abundance of the dye increases to a very high degree.
In the case of copper phthalocyanine, another method of preparing the raw dye has also been described, which consists in dry-grinding the raw dye with a substrate that can be removed again after grinding. This second method is also associated with the above-described polymorphic conversion of the dye. It was concluded from this that only the α-modification could be used as a pigment dye. (See.
Fiat Final Report 1313, Vol. III, pp. 446 and 447.) Of the numerous phthalocyanines containing metal atoms other than copper, some have not been used because of their lack of authenticity, others because of their unappealing color.
Among other things, the Fiat Final Report No. 1313, Vol. III, p. 311 also describes zinc phthalocyanine as a pigment of no interest. As a matter of fact. you get a dirty, very grayish green-blue,
if zinc phthalocyanine is dissolved with concentrated sulfuric acid in the usual manner for copper phthalocyanine and precipitated again with water and the dye sulfate thus obtained is subsequently converted by alkaline treatment into a-zinc phthalocyanine, which is completely analogous to the structure of the commercially available α-copper phthalocyanine .
The product obtained in this way is so inferior to the commercially available α-copper phthalocyanine in its coloring behavior, both in terms of color strength and tone purity, that the judgment cited above seems entirely justified. Because of the extensive analogy of the results of the sulfuric acid process with the process of dry grinding with substrates to produce the α-modification of copper phthalocyanine, it had to be expected that zinc phthalocyanine would also yield an unusable pigment after this second method.
It has now been found, surprisingly, that zinc phthalocyanines are obtained in dispersible form if crude zinc phthalocyanine is first ground with grinding substrates that can be removed by solvents in the absence of water until a strongly colored pigment is formed and then the grinding substrates are through Wash out with the solvent from .the grist removed.
The zinc phthalocyanines obtainable in this way differ from the starting material: in that, thanks to their dispersible form, they are extremely valuable pharmaceutical dyes of extraordinary purity and behave completely differently in terms of color than glass known product obtained by reprecipitation from sulfuric acid.
As a suitable grinding substrate that can be removed by solvents, basically any solid body that can be subsequently separated from the dye again by means of a solvent can be considered, with the following restrictions, which are easily recognizable for mechanical reasons.
Substrates that are much softer than zinc phthaloeyanine have little grinding effect. Substrates that are very hard, that is to say that cannot be easily broken up with the grinding device used, must first be in fine-grained form. An example of the first case is anhydrous sodium a.cetat. Examples of the second case are sodium chloride and anhydrous sodium sulfate; if they are used in coarsely crystalline form, as they crystallize out directly from aqueous solution, their grinding action is very poor.
In contrast, very finely crystalline sodium chloride, as it is e.g. B. occurs in reactions from organic, non-aqueous solutions, a good. Usable grinding substrate, and finely powdered anhydrous sodium sulfate, as it is obtained by dehydrating the decahydrate in a vacuum at a low temperature, is also usable well.
The choice of grinding substrates will therefore also be based on economic considerations. In this case, cheap, water-soluble substrates are usually given before, which are either worthless in themselves or easily regenerated. If, on the other hand, one wishes to prepare pigment pastes in organic solvents for certain purposes, preference will be given to organic substrates which are soluble in the solvents in question which are not added after milling has ended.
Among the water-soluble substrates, inorganic salts may be mentioned, such as. B. anhydrous chlorealium, anhydrous sodium carbonate, sodium metaborate (Na.B0 #,. 2H.0), potassium aluminum sulfate, ammonium sulfate, ammonium chloride, barium chloride, and especially anhydrous sodium ferrocyanide, which can be easily regenerated, and the like chen;
It is also possible to use anhydrous boric acid, aromatic sulfonic acids or their alkali salts, such as sulfanilic acid and its sodium salt, as well as anhydrous sodium and potassium hydroxide, sodium phenolate, etc.
The use of these compounds has the advantage that the grinding substrates can be removed with water as the solvent, and the resulting aqueous paste can be used directly for many purposes without prior drying.
If, on the other hand, it is desired to produce pastes in an organic solvent, it is expedient to use an organic substrate which is soluble in the desired solvents. For example, phthalic anhydride or p-toluenesulfamide can be used as the grinding substrate and with. Remove acetone again, whereby a paste of the pigment in acetone is formed, which is directly. can be incorporated into nitro- l.aeke.
The ratio between the raw zinc phthal.ocy anine and the grinding substrate can vary within wide limits; Preferably, 2 to 4 parts by weight of grinding substrate are used per part by weight of crude zinc phthalocyanine.
In terms of color strength, the new pigments are comparable to the a-copper phthalocyanine on the market, but their hue is significantly greener than the a-zinc phthalocyanine of exceptional purity obtained by reprecipitation with sulfuric acid.
The X-ray examination of these dyes has shown that zinc phthalocyanine also behaves differently in terms of its conversion from the ss structure to the a structure of li #upferphthalocyanine.
While f-copper phthalocyanine is completely converted into a-copper phthalocyanine on dry grinding with substrates, it remains. in the case of zinc phthalocyanine, the ss structure was essentially obtained in the same treatment. Only when the grinding substrate is removed, e.g. B. by subsequent Be treatment with an aqueous solution, the conversion to a-modification can be more or less largely.
It takes place all the more completely, the more extensive the comminution of the dye has been carried out. In general, this creates confusion of both modifications, which are the more green-tinged # the more the ss-modification prevails.
The latter, however, is just as valuable as the a-modification, contrary to the prevailing view, according to which the ss-Mo, d'ifika.tion is worthless in terms of color. If one pursues the goal of producing pigments with a strong, gold-colored appearance, the formation of the α-modification must be avoided.
In this context, it has also been found that the conversion into the α-modification, even of (once ground. Zinc phthalocyanines, can be completely or partially prevented when the grinding substrate is removed, for example by post-treatment with an aqueous solution. if the ground material is mixed with a non-ionic, organic liquid before the grinding substrate is removed.
Non-ionic, organic liquids are to be understood as those whose dissociation constant is lower than that of water, that is, which practically do not disintegrate into ions in aqueous solution. Such liquids can be used easily or visually soluble organic compounds in water, such as.
B. methyl, ethyl alcohol, Acetal.dehycl, acetone, dioxane, iso- and n-propyl alcohol, benzene, cyclohexanone, benzonitrile and the like. The mechanism of the protective effect exerted by the additive has not been clarified, but it is. using the examples given, it is only a matter of hand-crafted elaboration, the type and quantity of other suitable means.
In view of their easy removability, one will preferably use water-soluble or behaving low-boiling substances. CJnadequately or not at all effective are substances that give significantly ionized solutions with water, such. B. aliphatic, aliphatic or heterocyclic bases, as well as acids such as formic acid, acetic acid, etc.
If substances with low water solubility, such as benzene, gasoline, etc., are used, these are expediently only used in such small quantities that no coherent, non-aqueous phase is formed after the addition of water.
Is z. B. 1 part by weight of crude ss-zinc phthalocyanine with 3 parts by weight of anhydrous sodium ferrocyanide as the grinding substrate dry ground for 98 hours at normal temperature in the rod mill, the grinding media washed out with hot water and the dye dried at 100 C, a pigment is created, which consists essentially of α-zinc phthalocyanine.
The conversion started when wetting with water and became complete when drying, because the aqueous paste shows an X-ray diagram which does not match either α-zinc phthalocyanine or β-zinc phthalocyanine.
However, if you wet the dye completely with alcohol before washing it out and then wash it out, you get. an ß-zinc phthalocyanine in which no a-zinc phthalocyanine can be detected by X-ray and which differs from the starting product in that it is present in a dispersible form. The non-ionogenic organic liquids can advantageously be added at the beginning of the grinding process.
The quantities to be used must, however, be such that the grinding mixture remains powdery during grinding, otherwise the grinding effect is severely impaired.
If you take the grinding with substrates at elevated temperature, e.g. B. between 40 and 120 C, preferably between 60 and 90 C, then arises. Even without the use of non-ionic organic liquids, the f-zinc phthalocyanine in dispersible form.
So it is up to you to produce one or the other modification or any mixture of the two, whereby the hue of the pigment is between the limits of the still slightly reddish α-zinc phthalocyanine and the strongly greenish ß-zinc phthalocyanine can graduate as desired.
The following examples explain the present invention; The relationship between part by weight and part by volume is the same as that between grams and cubic centimeters.
example. 1: 512 parts by weight of phthalonitrile are heated with 88 parts by weight of zinc dust and 3500 parts by volume of α-chloronaphthalene to 200 ° C. with stirring. At this temperature, 9 parts by weight of powdered caustic potash are added and the mixture is heated to 240 ° C. for 5 hours. The reaction mass is then allowed to cool to 90 ° C. and filtered.
The filter cake is washed with 2000 parts by volume of hot ethyl alcohol (instead of being washed out, the adhering solvent can also be removed by vacuum distillation) and boiled in 3000 parts by volume of water and 300 parts by volume of concentrated hydrochloric acid, washed almost acid-free, whereupon the Filter cake with a mixture of 1000 parts by volume of water and 100 parts by volume of sodium hydroxide solution, 1360B6, overlaid,
is slowly sucked off and waxed. The filter cake is then dried at about 120.degree.
25 parts by weight of the crude zinc phthalocyanine thus prepared are ground with 75 parts by weight of sodium metaborate (NaB0 2.22H20) for 40 hours at room temperature in a closed rod mill.
The grinding mixture is suspended in 500 parts by volume of water, heated to 70.degree. C., filtered, washed and dried at 100.degree. A wonderfully blue, very soft and strongly colored pigment is obtained in which α-zinc phthalocyanine predominates over β-zinc phthalocyanine.
Instead of sodium metaborate, anhydrous chlorealcium, anhydrous sodium ferrocyanide, anhydrous sodium carbonate or sodium carbonate containing 1 mol of crystal water, potassium aluminum sulfate, anhydrous barium chloride and the like can also be used with the same success.
If you push the fineness too far, you can keep up with pigments. increasing red tinge, increasing hardness and consequently decreasing yield. For a given milling medium and a given milling device, the optimal milling time is determined by taking samples. Example 25 parts by weight of crude zinc phthalocyanine produced according to Example 1 are ground with 75 parts by weight of anhydrous sodium ferrocyanide in a closed rod mill at room temperature for 40 hours.
The grinding mixture is now made into a paste with 100 parts by volume of ethyl alcohol and gradually diluted with 1000 parts by volume of 20% sodium chloride solution. Bring to 60 to 70 C by heating. the sodium ferrocyanide in solution and filtered. The filter cake is washed out until the ferrocyanide reaction has disappeared and the dye is dried at 100.degree.
Ethy / alcohol and sodium ferroeya.nid can be regenerated from the filtrate in a known manner. The pigment obtained is dispersible β-zinc phthalocyanine, in which no α-zinc phthalocyanine can be detected by X-ray analysis. It is a brilliant, greenish blue with. soft texture and good coverage.
Compared to the pigment of Example 1, its hue is significantly greener and purer.
Here, too, the sodium ferrocyanide can be used as a grinding substrate. be replaced by the others quoted in Example 1. The sodium chloride solution used to dissolve the grinding substrate can optionally be replaced by a cold-saturated solution of the grinding substrate in an appropriate amount, depending on its solubility; in this way a filtrate is obtained which contains only a single salt which see wel ches, e.g. B. by evaporation, can easily be recovered.
As not. Ionic organic liquids can also replace ethyl alcohol with n-propyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, acetaldehyde, acetone, dioxane, etc. The amount of the aqueous solution used to dissolve the grinding substrate may have to be increased to such an extent that the non-ionic organic liquid. is completely soluble in it.
Example 3: 25 parts by weight of the crude zinc phthaloeya.nins produced according to example 1 are ground with 75 parts by weight of anhydrous sodium ferrocyanide and 2 parts by volume of n-propyl alcohol for 40 hours at room temperature in a closed rod mill . Another 4 parts by volume of n-propyl alcohol are then added and the mixture is ground for about. Continue for 30 minutes until: the mixture has become completely homogeneous.
The grinding substrate is then removed by heating with 1000 parts by volume of 20% saline solution to 60 to 70 ° C. and washed. remove the dye with hot water and dry. at 100 C.
A pigment which corresponds to that of Example 2 is obtained. The advantage over that is that smaller amounts of the non-ionic organic liquid (n-propyl alcohol or the like) are used here. As a result, it may be possible to dispense with their regeneration; also here non-ionic orga African liquids can be used that are less or no longer water-soluble, z. B. benzene, benzonitrile, cyclohexanone, etc.
If the non-ionic organic liquid is used in an even smaller amount, pigments are obtained; whose hue is between that from Example 1 and that from Example 2, for example if instead of 2 parts by volume of n-propyl alcohol in Example 3, 1 part by volume of cyclohexanone is used and the grinding mixture is worked up without further addition of ethyl alcohol or the like.
Example 4: 25 parts by weight of R.oh-Zinkphthalocya.nin prepared according to Example 1 are added. 7 5 parts by weight of anhydrous sodium ferrocyanide at about. Grind at 85 C in a closed rod mill or ball mill for 40 hours. In the case of large batches of around 200 kg of raw dye, this temperature can be generated without the need for artificial heat supply, simply through the frictional heat.
The grinding mixture is then suspended in 1000 parts by volume of 20% sodium chloride solution, the ferrocyanide is dissolved by heating to 60 to 70 ° C. and the dye suspension is filtered. The filter cake is washed out and dried at 100.degree. The dye corresponds to the one obtained in Example 2.
