Abstract
A process for treating a pigment for incorporation into surface coating compositions comprises precipitating the pigment in the presence of two surfactants, or after-treating a slurry of the pigment with two surfactants, one of the surfactants being cationic and the other anionic, and both having a surface tension of not more than 38.5 dynes per cm. in a 0.2% by weight aqueous solution at 25 DEG C. Suitable pigment slurries for the second embodiment contain 1-20% by weight pigment. The cationic surfactant may be a water-soluble amine salt of a straight or branched-chain C12-C20 amine with an inorganic or organic acid M.W. less than 150, e.g. a rosin acid amine. The anionic surfactant may be an alkyl aryl sulphonic acid or sulphonate where the alkyl is straight or branched-chain C10-C14, particularly dodecylbenzene sulphonic acid or sulphonate. Treated pigments which are exemplified are organic violets, yellows and reds characterized by Colour Index Nos, and, in Example 7, an azo pigment produced in situ from m-nitro-p-toluidine and b -naphthol. The treated pigments may be incorporated into nitrocellulose or zinc resinate gravure inks, a polyamide printing ink, or a tint lithographic varnish mediumALSO:Pigments treated to improve their flow, gloss retention, or dispersibility by means of a cationic plus an anionic surfactant possessing surface tensions not more than 38.5 dynes per cm. in a 0.2% wt. aqueous solution at 25 DEG C. may then be incorporated into an alkyd resin paint medium. In Examples 7, 8 an azo pigment and a red pigment, C.I. Pigment Red 3 respectively, are incorporated into a medium based on a long oil linseed penta-alkyd resin containing 70% oil base and 20% phthalic anhydride.
