Abstract

Crude metal-free b -phthalocyanine is ground with a solvent-removable substratum and with at least 2 per cent of a non-basic organic liquid boiling below 200 DEG C., the quantity of such liquid being such that the mixture remains in powder form during grinding, the substratum being then removed by a solvent, and the pigment dried if desired. In examples, crude metal-free phthalocyanine is ground with (1) sodium ferrocyanide and propanol or benzine or hexane; (2) cane sugar and benzine, and in a further example (3) the product of (1) is made into a wallpaper colour with alcohol, aqueous gum arabic, and chalk. Other liquids specified are methanol, ethanol, butanol, acetaldehyde, furfural, acetone, ethyl acetate, hexane, benzene, cyclohexane, cyclohexane, or carbon tetrachloride. Substrata specified are finely-divided sodium chloride or anhydrous sodium sulphate, calcium chloride, anhydrous sodium carbonate, sodium metaborate, ammonium sulphate, barium chloride, anhydrous boric acid, sodium salts of aromatic sulphonic acids, anhydrous sodium or potassium hydroxide, sodium phenolate, phthalic anhydride, p-toluene sulphonamide. The pigments colour cellulose lacquers, resins, natural or synthetic rubber, polymers, viscose, cellulose esters in the mass, and are useful in textile printing, and in the manufacture of wallpaper and lithographic ink.
