Description
Process for the production of solvent-resistant metal phthalocyanine pigments with improved resistance to crystallization while that of authenticity and beauty of the hue, copper phthalocyanine in the field of printing inks was rapidly unattainable gained great practical importance, it often failed completely in pigmentation of lacquers and paints, especially in the presence of organic solvents and Diluent, as such preparations often become more after a short time or a less pronounced decrease in their color strength became practically unusable.
The cause here was a harmful coarsening of the Pigment particles out through crystal formation. The X-ray spectroscopy provided further clarification Investigation, which the existence of two, in the case of metal-free phthalocyanine even of three different polymorphic forms of the pigment. The red-tinged form of the commercial pigment was used here as a modification, the technical one On the other hand, production of crystalline greenish copper phthalocyanine obtained initially referred to as the ß-form.
The latter turned out to be the more stable modification into which the a-form changes to about 300 ° C when heated. In the fine distribution of the technical crystalline ß-form for ready-to-use pigment, e.g. B. by amorphous precipitation from solution in concentrated sulfuric acid, through pseudomorphic swelling agents 70 to 80% sulfuric acid, by salt grinding, etc., turns this into the strongest color a-form recovered. This form, which is colouristically valuable in itself, tends in spite of it extremely low solubility in the usual solvents Temperature in the presence of specifically organic solvents, such as. B. benzene and of its homologues to convert back into the stable crystalline ß-modification.
So soll z. Various attempts have been made to remedy this deficiency. So should z. B. the solvent resistance of Cu phthalocyanine by admixtures can be increased by monosulfonated dye or its alkali salts. Also mixed precipitations with aluminum benzoate should have a stabilizing effect. The stabilization takes place here but at the expense of reduced lightfastness and color strength.
Crystallization-resistant pigments are also said to be obtained by salt-grinding weakly chlorinated copper phthalocyanine with 5 to 100 % tin phthalocyanine. Additions of 3% finely divided magnesium phthalocyanine and 10% aliphatic or cycloaliphatic amines or alkanolamines have also been proposed as stabilizers. Prolonged heating of Cu phthalocyanine in an AlC13 NaCl melt should also produce a blue pigment that does not crystallize.
However, essential technical and economic factors are liable to all of these processes Disadvantages. On the one hand, such additives reduce the color strength in an undesirable way Way, on the other hand, requires z. B. the salt grinding extensive, expensive facilities and a long grinding time until the grain size and color strength are sufficient are; the presence of tin phthalocyanine also disrupts the coloristic and fastness properties.
It has now been found that one can be more simple and very economical Include phthalocyanine pigments of great color strength and clarity of color improved paint properties if one uses the known phthalic anhydride-urea process, however with partial replacement of the usual copper-releasing compound by alumina hydrate, produces a mixture of copper and aluminum phthalocyanine pigments, then this stirred at ordinary temperature in 75- to 80% sulfuric acid and then separating the sulfuric acid in a manner known per se. When treating with the 75 to 80% sulfuric acid is practically not dissolved in the pigment, but over the initially formed sulfate gradually into a with swelling phenomena converted to pseudomorphic, solvent-resistant form. The reaction temperature should generally not exceed about 40 ° C, at least not for a long time, as higher temperatures can lead to more cloudy pigments. If necessary you ensure by appropriate cooling that the temperature is 20 to Holds 30 ° C.
Another decisive factor for the success of the stabilization is one thorough mixing of the batch and the highest possible degree of viscosity of the sulfuric acids Suspension. The latter can and is regulated by the amount of sulfuric acid limited only by the efficiency of the stirring or kneading device. the The amount of sulfuric acid can, depending on the type of stirrer or kneader used, change within wide limits. Too low a viscosity, like too high a viscosity Sulfuric acid would occur, the conversion time unnecessarily and prolonged affects the mixing effect.
Due to the presence of the small amounts of the also a clear one The purity of the stabilized aluminum phthalocyanine having a blue hue Pigments not affected. The pigment obtained according to the invention is distinguished characterized by its bright blue hue. According to X-ray spectroscopic examinations However, this is exclusively the a-form of the pigment.
It is very strong in color and against lacquer solvents and thinners, such as B. xylene, resistant to crystallization even when heated to water bath temperature for a long time, so that nitro lacquers or other lacquer preparations produced with them have their original properties Maintain color strength even during storage.
The stabilizing effect of the acid treatment according to the invention was by no means foreseeable, because according to the state of the art it had to be it is expected that the crude pigment originally present as β-form will be expected here only into the unstable α-modification, which is not inherently resistant to crystallization would pass over, which is also the case if no aluminum phthalocyanine is present is.
A mixture of copper and aluminum phthalocyanine suitable for sulfuric acid treatment is advantageously obtained when, in the phthalic anhydride-urea process, about 5 to 100 % of the copper-releasing compound is replaced by the alumina compound in the reaction mixture. Surprisingly, the kerdehydrate dried at about 100 ° C. is particularly suitable for this purpose.
It was by no means to be foreseen that this would take place under the usual conditions of the phthalic anhydride-urea process none. Supplying phthalocyanine pigments Aluminum oxide take part in the implementation at all and a solvent-resistant Mixed pigment would deliver, all the less so than according to the previously known Working methods of self-ionizable salts, such as AIC13, in the urea-solvent process in the presence of catalysts such as ammonium molybdate, only yields of 10 to 15% the theory of Al phthalocyanine result. In order to use A1 C13 to create a non-crystallizing, To obtain solvent-resistant Cu phthalocyanine, it was according to the previously known Process necessary, copper phthalocyanine even in high-boiling inert solvents with at least 50 l) /, of its weight Al C13 (sublimed) to be heated to 180 ° C and also the solvent resistance by introducing 1 to 2% Cl (based on Cu phthalocyanine) to improve. Even treatment of several hours halogen-free copper phthalocyanine in a eutectic melt of AIC13 / NaCI at 140 to 165 ° C should lead to a pigment stable in xylene. With all of these Working methods, however, are mainly concerned with the entry of chlorine atoms and not a substitution of the metallic central atom by aluminum.
Compared to this method, the method of operation according to the invention offers a considerable technical and economic progress, since very little Amounts of the cheap, non-corrosive and convenient to use alumina hydrate suffice to stabilize the pigment.
Compared to the above-mentioned method using salt grinding the inventive method has the great technical and economic Advantage of the simpler and cheaper equipment. No pre-cleaning is required of the starting pigment by boiling with water or acids and requires only one Fraction of the required working time.
The following example of the stabilization of a mixed pigment prepared using alumina hydrate dried at 80 to 100 ° C. serves to explain the procedure in more detail, the parts being parts by weight unless otherwise stated. Example a) Production of the crude pigment 150 parts of phthalic anhydride, 220 parts of urea, 27 parts of copper oxychloride (with about 50% copper content) and 6 parts of dried alumina hydrate are placed in a closed three-necked flask with a short air cooling tube and a subsequent descending cooler kept at about 80 ° C (with about 350 /, Al content) and 1.4 parts of ammonium molybdate in 580 parts of trichlorobenzene brought to 200 ° C., water and proportions of the trichlorobenzene distilling off. When the dye has formed, which takes about 3 hours, it is diluted with 250 parts of cold trichlorobenzene, filtered hot and washed with a little trichlorobenzene at 100 to 120 ° C. until the filtrate no longer appears dark in color. The dried and solvent-free filter residue consists of a mixed pigment of copper and a little aluminum phthalocyanine. The yield is around 185 parts of a 70 to 75% crude pigment, corresponding to 90 to 95% of theory, which gives stable, bright blue pigment colors when finely dispersed without the otherwise customary pre-cleaning by boiling with hydrochloric acid. b) Fine distribution and stabilization 45 parts of the crude pigment are stirred in 500 parts of sulfuric acid at 60 ° B6 at normal temperature with a stirrer with good mixing action until a sample of the mass, which has gradually become dark olive and viscous, is washed neutral after precipitation in water and drying when heated in xylene on a water bath (about 1 to 2 g dry sample for 10 to 15 ccm xylene) under the microscope no longer shows any crystal needles and no change in the pigment grain occurs even after prolonged heating.
After working up, if necessary with the addition of surface-active substances Aid to improve the technical pigment properties, one obtains stable, extremely strong pigments in almost quantitative yield, calculated on the pigment content of the raw product.
The proportion of sulfuric acid during stabilization can be significantly reduced especially when using kneaders. So is the atomic ratio of Cu: Al in the production of the crude pigment is not limited to 9: 1.
To produce a pigment that is particularly suitable for storage-stable nitro and other paint preparations, the dispersed sulfuric acid batch can be prepared in such a way that the pigment suspension of about 100 % sulfuric acid obtained by precipitation in water is allowed to settle, most of the acid is removed and topped up with water to an acid concentration of about 5%. After adding 10 to 15 parts of nitric acid at 40 ° B6, the mixture is heated to boiling and filtered while hot. The pigment, washed acid-free with warm water, is washed on the filter with 1 to 20% hot sodium hydroxide solution at 80 to 90 ° C or an equally strong soda or ammonia solution until it is colorless and then washed with water until it is free of alkali. The residue, optionally kneaded with 2 to 5% (calculated on the dry content of the pigment) of a suitable dispersant or protective agent, is then dried at about 60 ° C. and gives, in practically quantitative yield, a very strong, clear, pale greenish blue pigment which is particularly suitable for dipping, spraying and similar paints.
