Abstract
Cobalt phthalocyanines substituted by less than four sulphonic acid, sulphinic acid, sulphonamide, sulphonalkylamide, sulphondialkylamide, carboxylic acid, carboxylic amide or nitro groups are obtained by heating to 170-250 DEG C a mixture of (1) an o-arylene dicarboxylic acid, anhydride, amide or imide containing one of the above substituents with (2) an o-arylene dicarboxylic acid, anhydride, amide or imide unsubstituted or substituted by groups decreasing the hydrophilic properties; urea and ammonium molybdate are included in the reaction mixture, and preferably also an organic solvent. The products may comprise mixtures of hydrophilic substituted and nonhydrophilic substituted cobalt phthalocyanines, and are vattable. If the hydrophilic group is sulphonic acid, such a mixture may be made by sulphonating cobalt phthalocyanine until the product contains 15-40 per cent of the monosulphonic acid. In the examples, cobalt phthalocyanine is partially sulphonated as above, and phthalocyanines are made from mixtures of (1) phthalic anhydride and sodium 4-sulphophthalate, (2) phthalic anhydride and phthalimide-4-sulphonamide, (3) phthalic anhydride and phthalimide-4-sulphomethylamide, (4) phthalic anhydride and phthalic acid-4-sulphodimethylamide, (5) 4-bromophthalic anhydride and phthalimide-4-sulphomethylamide, and (6) phthalic anhydride and 4-nitrophthalic acid. The Provisional Specification refers generally to the production of hydrophilic-substituted cobalt phthalocyanines by starting with suitably substituted phthalic acid derivatives or by introducing the substituents after complex formation. Additional hydrophilic groups mentioned are hydroxy, alkoxy, sulphon-aralkylamide, cyano, amino, alkylamino and acylamino. In further examples, (1) cobalt phthalocyanine is treated with phosgene in the presence of aluminium chloride and sodium chloride; the product may be mixed with cobalt phthalocyanine; (2) a dyestuff is obtained by heating together cobalt phthalocyanine, trimellitic acid, cobalt sulphate, urea, ammonium chloride and ammonium molybdate; (3) cobalt phthalocyanine is heated with phthalic anhydride and aluminium chloride. Specifications 322,169, [Class 2(iii)], and 460,147 are referred to.
