Class 122(iii) A seal between two members having coaxial cylindrical surfaces such as a cylinder housing 13 and a cylinder liner 11 comprises a radially split steel seal ring 12 of U-shaped cross-section and having a convex outer surface 15 inserted in a peripheral recess 18 in the cylinder liner 11 with the legs of the U extending inwardly, the width of the recess 18 being slightly greater that the width of the ring 12 and the diameter of the ring with its ends abutting being slightly greater than the bore of the cylinder housing 13 so that when the cylinder liner 11 is inserted within the cylinder housing 13 the legs of the U are forced apart and bear against the lateral sides of the recess 18.
