Abstract

676,751. Cylinders. STANDARD MOTOR CO., Ltd., GRINHAM, E G., and WEBSTER, H. G. July 7, 1950 [Oct. 21, 1949], No. 27051/49. Classes 7(ii) and 7(iii) In an internalcombustion engine of the kind in which the combustion space at the top dead-centre position of the piston is formed almost entirely in the cylinder head, with or without a portion scooped out from the end face of the piston, the topmost piston ring being mounted in a groove which is below the end face of the piston head, and the upper end of the piston 35 and the coacting portion of the cylinder bore 32 being stepped and of less diameter than along the rest of their lengths, the radial clearances provided between these reduced parts are not less than the normal clearances between the main portions of the piston and bore. In one form the invention is applied to a spark-ignition engine with a hemi-spherical combustion space the lower part of which is defined by a flat-topped piston whilst a valve is positioned on each side of the sparking plug located in the cylinder head. In another form, as applied to a compression-ignition engine, a spherical combustion-chamber 26a with a fuel injector 29 therein communicates by a passage 30 with a recess 31 in the piston head. The configuration of the upper part of the cylinder bore is substantially the same as disclosed in Specification 676,740.
