Abstract

676,483. Thermal switches. VIERSEN, J. H. VAN, and BENDER, C. C. May 16, 1950. No. 12158/50. Class 38 (v). [Also in Group XI] An electric milk boiler (see Group XI) has a switch actuated by the tilting of the milk-containing vessel due to the transference of milk upon boiling from a main reservoir to a separate compartment. The switch may comprise a conventional mercury switch located at the side of the vessel remote from the compartment, or it may comprise a projection 16 which rests on the supporting surface for the vessel during heating, to contact a disc 17, and hence close the circuit through a heating element connected across 14, 15. On tilting of the vessel, the projection 16 is lifted free of the surface, and a spring 18 acts to break the circuit between the projection 16 and disc 17. Fig 6 illustrates a similar switch in which the projection 16 bears on a pivoted arm 19 with a spring 21. If desired the switch may be arranged below a part of the vessel which normally does not touch the supporting surface, the switch acting to break the circuit upon pushing-in of the projection 16. This may be arranged by constructing the arm 19 as a see-saw.
