Abstract

863,118. Thermal switches. EVANS, O. (S. W. Farber Inc.). March 13, 1957, No. 8350/57. Class 38 (5). [Also in Groups XI and XXXVI] A switch mechanism 42 for an electric frying pan comprises a stainless steel tube 60 having within it and attached to its projecting end an elongated metal strip 70 having a substantially lower coefficient of thermal expansion than the tube 60. The tube 60 enters a metal sleeve 32 bonded to the bottom of the pan. The other end of the strip 70 is secured to a flexible lever 64 welded at 68 to the tube 60. On rise in temperature of the heater, the strip 70 raises the free end of the lever 64, and a boss 66 thereon raises an arm 74 carrying a contact 78, thereby breaking the supply. The contacts 78, 80 of the switch are carried on flexible arms 74, 76 mounted on a support 72 secured to the tube 60. The member 72 is threaded to receive a pin 83 of an adjusting knob to regulate the operating temperature of the switch, the lower end of the pin bearing on the strip 76 carrying contact 80. The knob 84 carries temperature indicia.
