Abstract

1408388 Immersion heater RUSSELL HOBBS Ltd 11 Sept 1972 42152/72 Heading H5H [Also in Division H1] An electric kettle or other liquid heater having a vapour controlled thermal switch manually operable by movement of a control member, e.g. dolly, 32, between an ON and an OFF position and a "boil dry" thermal switch which is reset after actuation by movement of the control member 32 from its ON to its OFF position. The boil dry switch comprises a fixed block 25 formed as an extension of a metal carrier 10 sandwiched between insulating plates 11, 12 and secured by screws to the plastics body 14, and a moving contact blade 26 mounted on the carrier 10 but insulated therefrom by insulating plate 11. The blade 26 is bifurcated with its split ends pulled together by a silver inlay copper strip 26<SP>1</SP>, and is snap-acting between two stable positions. A stainless steel rod 28 whose remote end is secured to the centre of a metal-sheathed element, transmits motion caused by expansion of the metal sheathed element to the moving contact blade 26 by way of an actuator arm 31 which co-operates by means of a horizontal dimple 311 with a ceramic bead 80 on the rod 28 and by means of a horizontal dimple 3111 with the bottom of the snap-acting blade 26. A spring-biased plunger 34 is movable by extension 33 of vapour switch operating dolly 32 to engage blade 26 and reset the boil dry switch when the dolly is moved to its OFF position. The fixed contact blade 25 is connected by an extension 27 to the line cool end 16 of the heating element and the moving contact blade 26 is provided with a connection strip 30 which connects the boil dry switch in series with the vapour controlled switch. The vapour controlled switch comprises a moving contact 43 biased into engagement with a fixed contact blade 44. An arm 45 of dolly 32 co-operates with an extension 46 of contact blade 43. A snap-action spring 54 biases the dolly 32 into its two stable positions. A bimetal 51 positioned between baffles 81 of a chamber 50 connected to the kettle interior by a pipe acts on the dolly 32 by means of a plunger (not shown) to open contacts 43, 44 when the kettle boils. The contacts remain open until the moving contact 43 is moved by dolly arm 45 when the dolly is returned to its ON position. The earth pin 59 is connected to a metal mounting bracket for the dolly, to the metal lid of the kettle and to an earthing plate of the heating element.
