Abstract

675,949. Sharpening razor blades. WALTON, A. L. Jan. 25, 1951, No. 1930/51. Addition to 640,133. Class 60. The invention of the parent Specification is modified to permit the sharpening of singleedged blades and to provide certain constructional improvements upon such invention. The construction shown in Fig. 1 is for sharpening the opposite sides of a single-edged blade 4 successively and comprises a frame 1 having a sharpening roller 2, a seat 3 for the blade, and a driving roller 8 journalled in slots 6. A casing 9 slidably fits the frame 1 and has two webs 10 and 11 which hold the blade in contact with the seat 3 and the roller 2. When the appliance is moved over a flat surface in the direction of the arrow a, the roller 8 is displaced in the slots 6 until it comes into contact with the roller which is then rotated in a direction away from the edge of the blade. When the direction of movement of the appliance is reversed, the roller 8 is displaced away from the sharpening roller so that the latter is never rotated against the blade. In a modification of this construction, the web 10 is replaced by a second sharpening roller journalled in the casing 9 and driven by surface contact with the roller 2, the edge of the blade being inserted between the rollers. The construction shown in Fig. 3 is for sharpening double-edged blades. The driving roller 8 drives the sharpening rollers 13, 14 alternately. The frame includes a cross bar 16 with pins 17 to locate the blade which is pressed into contact with the sharpening rollers by webs 19 on the casing. In this construction, the ratio of the diameters of the driving and sharpening rollers may be varied, and the webs 19 may be replaced by bushes to fit over the pins 17. Fig. 5 shows a construction in which the blade is secured by a pair of pads 21 of resilient material held in the casing by bars 22.
